Now that civilization has kicked in, there is no real need for your body to be in perfect shape anymore. Survival of the fittest must be redefined. It is not the physically strong people who survive, but the mentally strong. Yet people enjoy a sense of accomplishment when they physically challenge themselves.
More and more people are participating in marathons each year. It´s as if the more progress humanity makes in terms of technology, the more we want to escape that reality and ‘go back to the wild’. This is not strange considering that technology is moving faster than we can keep up. How many people really use the computers they are using every day? Our bodies and instincts don’t adapt to the speed with which we learn new things.
But not all people are satisfied with just marathons. Running miles isn’t that special. That’s why some people need extreme sports to get that kick. Like climbing the Mount Everest, skydiving or hunting bears. These give you the idea you’re on top of the world; that you’ve conquered it. The kick you get there will keep you going for a while again in real life. Because the dreams you’ll hope become true in daily life, retiring at the age of 25, being famous, writing a bestseller, are too unrealistic. These goals will never give you that kick because they’re too distant. That’s why extreme sports are a perfect fit for kicks; they’re easy and yet extreme.
But actually you’re fooling yourself in thinking you’re actually on top of the world. Climbing the Mount Everest is quite an accomplishment – except you’re wearing protective clothing and there’s oxygen on you back. Skydiving is like jumping to death, amazing – but with a parachute on your back. Hunting down a bear is not nothing – but you’re the one with the gun and he’s only got his paws.
This might be a little confusing but what it comes down to is this: because you can’t realize your dreams in a world of modern technology you try to do something ‘special’ by escaping that world and reaching your limits. But in reaching them you’re actually using the technology you were trying to get away from – yes – the clothing, the oxygen, the parachute and the gun. Doing extreme sports is nothing more than fooling yourself.
